Welcome, Dear Reader, to Your New Journey
Assalamu Alaikum (Peace be upon you), dear brothers and sisters! If you are a new Muslim, we want to send you the warmest of welcomes from all of us here at Quran Lantern Academy. Taking the step to embrace Islam is a profound and beautiful milestone. However, we also know that this transition can sometimes bring unexpected challenges. You might face misunderstandings from family, feel overwhelmed by learning new habits, or experience moments of doubt.
When life feels heavy, where do we turn? Today, we invite you to step back in time and look at the life of one of the most beloved companions of our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). His story is a powerful reminder that no matter how difficult your present circumstances may be, faith can grant you unshakable strength.
Who Was Bilal ibn Rabah?
To understand the depth of resilience in early Islamic history, we must look at Bilal ibn Rabah (may Allah be pleased with him). Long before he became one of the most respected figures in Islam, Bilal was an enslaved man in Makkah. He had no social status, no wealth, and no legal rights according to the society of that time.
When the message of Islam—stating that all human beings are equal before God, regardless of race or social standing—reached Bilal’s ears, it resonated deeply with his soul. He recognized the truth immediately and embraced Islam with a pure heart.
Facing Severe Trials for the Truth
Embracing Islam in early Makkah was not easy. For Bilal, whose master was a fierce opponent of the Prophet Muhammad, it was life-threatening. When his master discovered that Bilal had accepted Islam, he subjected him to unimaginable cruelty in the scorching desert heat.
His master would force him to lie down on the burning desert sand, placing a massive, heavy boulder on his chest so he could not move or breathe easily. He was beaten and starved, all in an attempt to force him to renounce his faith and utter words praising the pagan idols of Makkah.
The Power of “Ahad, Ahad!” (One, One!)
Picture the scene: the blistering sun beating down, the suffocating weight of the rock, and the immense physical pain. In that terrifying moment of agony, what did Bilal say? Did he curse his fate? Did he whisper surrender?
No. With every ounce of his remaining strength, Bilal repeated just one word over and over again: “Ahad! Ahad!” which translates to “He is One! He is One!” referring to the One True God, Allah.
Bilal’s torturers were baffled. They could break his body, but they could not touch his soul. His faith was anchored in something far greater than any temporary worldly suffering. Eventually, he was rescued when Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), a close companion of the Prophet, purchased his freedom and set him free for the sake of Allah.
Lessons from Bilal’s Story for New Muslims
You might be wondering: “What does the story of Bilal have to do with my life today? I am not being tortured in the desert.”
While your trials may look very different from Bilal’s, the core spiritual lessons remain exactly the same:
- Your Pain is Temporary, Your Faith is Eternal: Whatever hardship you are facing right now—whether it is loneliness, family friction, or personal doubts—is temporary. Your connection with Allah is permanent.
- Internal Freedom: Even when Bilal was physically bound in chains, he was spiritually free because he knew who his Lord was. True freedom comes from submitting only to Allah, not to the opinions or pressures of human beings.
- Patience Brings Honor: Bilal went from being an oppressed slave to becoming the very first person chosen by the Prophet Muhammad to call the believers to prayer (the Mu’adhdhin). His legacy endures as a symbol of honor and dignity.
How to Apply This in Your Daily Life
It is one thing to read an inspiring story, but how do we bring these lessons into our modern, everyday lives? Here are a few practical steps you can take starting today:
1. Anchor Your Heart in Hard Moments
When you feel overwhelmed by anxiety, stress, or judgment from others, softly whisper to yourself or out loud: “Allah is enough for me.” Remember Bilal’s cry of “Ahad! Ahad!” Let it remind you that no matter who is opposing you or what obstacle is in your way, Allah is greater than all of them.
2. Build a Daily Routine of Connection
Bilal found his strength in his direct relationship with God. You can build this same strength through your daily prayers (Salah) and by reciting or listening to the Quran. Even just a few minutes a day spent reflecting on the words of Allah can recharge your spiritual battery.
3. Seek Support in a Positive Community
You do not have to walk this path alone. Find supportive, compassionate mentors and fellow believers who understand your journey. A strong community is like a shield against isolation.
Conclusion
Dear friend, your journey as a Muslim is a sacred path. There will be sunny days, and there may be stormy days, but just like Bilal, you possess a light in your heart that no one can extinguish. Take things one step at a time, be gentle with yourself, and trust in the One who created you.
Here at Quran Lantern Academy, we are honored to walk beside you on this incredible journey of faith, learning, and discovery. May Allah make your path easy, fill your heart with peace, and reward you immensely for every effort you make. Until next time, stay steadfast and keep shining!
