Suddenly, there are new words to learn, new routines to establish, and a whole new worldview to embrace.

Today, we are going to explore the core of our religion: Islamic Faith and Belief, known in Arabic as Aqeedah (ah-quee-dah). Think of your beliefs as the roots of a magnificent tree; the stronger and healthier your roots, the more resilient you will be against the storms of life.
What is Islamic Faith (Aqeedah)?
In simple terms, Aqeedah refers to the articles of faith that anchor a Muslim’s heart. Derived from an Arabic root meaning ‘to tie a knot securely,’ it represents the firm knots of conviction in your mind and soul. When you accepted Islam, you unlocked a perspective that brings ultimate peace: understanding who God is, why you exist, and where you are going.
The foundation of Islamic belief is famously summarized as the Six Articles of Faith. Let’s break these down together in a way that brings warmth to your heart.
1. Belief in Allah (God)
This is the centerpiece of Islam. To believe in Allah is to know that He is the One and Only Creator, Sustainer, and Cherisher of the universe. He has no partners, no children, and nothing is like Him. For a new Muslim, this is often the most liberating realization: you do not pray to intermediaries, saints, or statues. You have a direct, unblocked, 24/7 hotline straight to the One who loves you more than seventy mothers ever could.
2. Belief in the Angels
Allah created beings of light called angels who never disobey Him and constantly worship Him. They have specific duties, such as Jibril (Gabriel), who brought revelation to the prophets, and the angels who write down our good deeds. Knowing that unseen helpers surround you brings an immense sense of comfort and protection.
3. Belief in the Divine Books
Muslims believe that Allah sent guidance to humanity throughout history through various prophets. These include the Torah given to Moses, the Psalms given to David, the Gospel given to Jesus, and finally, the Holy Quran given to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon them all). The Quran is Allah’s final, direct, and uncorrupted speech to humanity—a glowing lantern for your daily walk.
4. Belief in the Prophets and Messengers
From Adam, Noah, Abraham, and Moses to Jesus and Muhammad (peace be upon them all), Muslims love and respect every single prophet sent by God. They were human beings chosen to show us how to live righteous, compassionate lives. Believing in them connects us to a rich, beautiful lineage of divine guidance.
5. Belief in the Day of Judgment
This life is a test, a temporary waiting room. Belief in the Day of Judgment means we know that ultimate justice exists. Every tear you cried, every silent hardship you endured for the sake of Allah, and every hidden good deed will be accounted for and rewarded abundantly. This belief gives immense patience during difficult times.
6. Belief in Divine Decree (Qadar)
Everything that happens in the universe—the good and the seemingly difficult—is with the knowledge and permission of Allah. Qadar teaches us to do our absolute best and then leave the results in the hands of the Most Wise. If something misses you, it was never meant for you; if something hits you, it was never meant to miss you.
How to Apply This in Your Daily Life
Knowing these beliefs intellectually is wonderful, but the beauty of Islam is that faith must be tasted in the heart and practiced in daily actions. Here is how you can nurture your Islamic faith starting today:
- Cultivate Gratitude (Shukr): Whenever something good happens, pause and say Alhamdulillah (All praise is due to Allah). Remind your heart that every blessing comes directly from Him.
- Practice Trust (Tawakkul): When anxiety creeps in about your career, relationships, or future, gently remind yourself of Divine Decree. Breathe out, do your part, and trust that Allah is orchestrating the best possible outcome for you.
- Talk to Allah (Dua): You don’t need formal Arabic words to speak to your Creator. In your native language, pour your heart out to Him in prostration (Sujood) or whenever you feel overwhelmed. He is always listening.
- Read the Quran Daily: Even if it is just five minutes a day, open the pages of the Quran. Let its words wash over your soul like cool water on a hot day.
