Welcome to Your Journey of Faith
Assalamu Alaikum, dear friend! Welcome back to Quran Lantern Academy. If you are a new Muslim (revert) navigating the beautiful yet sometimes overwhelming path of Islam, take a deep breath. You are doing amazing, and Allah sees every single effort you are making.
Today, we are going to step back in time. We will walk through the dusty, sun-scorched streets of early Makkah to visit a story that has brought comfort to millions of believers for over 1,400 years. It is the story of a man whose body was chained, but whose soul was entirely free. It is the story of Bilal ibn Rabah, one of the most beloved companions of our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
Who Was Bilal ibn Rabah?
Before Islam reached his ears, Bilal was not a free man. He was an enslaved person in Makkah, belonging to Umayyah ibn Khalaf, one of the fiercest opponents of the new message of Islam. Bilal had no rights, no wealth, and no social standing in the eyes of the society around him. He was simply viewed as property.
However, when the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) began preaching the message of the One True God—Allah—a profound shift happened in Bilal’s heart. He heard the Quran, and it resonated with the deepest parts of his soul. He learned that in the sight of Allah, no human being is better than another except by piety and good character. Bilal embraced Islam, accepting a faith that declared his ultimate human dignity.
The Test of Endurance: Standing Firm When It Hurts
Accepting Islam in Makkah during its early days was not easy. For Bilal, it brought immediate and severe persecution. His master, Umayyah, was furious that an enslaved person under his control dared to choose his own faith.
Umayyah wanted to make an example out of Bilal to scare others away from Islam. Under the blistering, burning midday sun of the Arabian desert, Bilal was dragged out onto the scorching sand. Heavy stones were placed upon his chest, pressing the hot earth into his skin. Umayyah demanded that Bilal renounce Islam and curse the Prophet Muhammad. He commanded Bilal to worship the stone idols of Makkah instead.
The Power of One Word: Ahad, Ahad!
Imagine the scene, my dear brother or sister. The heat is unbearable, the weight on his chest is crushing his lungs, and he is being tortured simply for saying, “My Lord is Allah.”
Did Bilal give in? Did he whisper a denial just to save his physical body from pain?
No. With a heart overflowing with the sweetness of faith, Bilal used the only breath he had to utter a single, defiant, beautiful word:
“Ahad… Ahad!” (He is One! He is One!)
Over and over again, despite the agony, Bilal repeated this declaration of God’s absolute oneness. He refused to let his faith be compromised.
Rescue and Elevation: From Trials to Triumph
Eventually, the great companion Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by the brutal scene. Moved with compassion and righteous indignation, Abu Bakr purchased Bilal and immediately granted him his absolute freedom. Bilal was finally a free man in the eyes of the world, just as he had always been free in the sight of Allah.
When the Muslims established the call to prayer (Adhan) in Madinah, who was chosen for this magnificent honor? It was Bilal. Because of his beautiful, melodious voice and his unwavering loyalty, the Prophet Muhammad chose Bilal to be the very first Mu’adhin (the one who calls people to prayer) in Islam. The man who once lay in the desert sand with a heavy stone on his chest was now standing high, calling millions to bow before the Creator.
How to Apply This in Your Daily Life
You might be wondering: “This is an incredible story, but how does it relate to my life today as a new Muslim?” While you may not face physical torture for your faith, you certainly face your own “desert sands” and “heavy stones.” Here is how you can apply the lesson of Bilal:
- Stand firm when family or friends misunderstand: Sometimes, reverting brings pushback from loved ones who don’t understand your choice. Remember Bilal’s steadfastness when you feel pressured to compromise your values.
- Find your “Ahad” moment in daily struggles: When anxiety, stress, or hardship weighs heavily on your chest, remember that Allah is One, and He is in control. Turn to Him in prayer.
- Embrace your worth: Islam elevated Bilal regardless of his past social status. Never let your past sins, mistakes, or background make you feel unworthy of Allah’s immense mercy.
- Use your voice for good: Just as Bilal used his voice to call others to goodness, use your unique journey and voice to spread kindness and truth around you.
Conclusion
Dear friend, your journey to Islam is precious. Whenever you feel overwhelmed by the challenges of learning how to pray, changing your habits, or explaining your faith to others, remember Bilal ibn Rabah under the desert sun. Remember that patience, perseverance, and holding tightly to Allah always leads to ultimate relief and honor.
