Welcome to the Beautiful Journey of Islamic Faith
Assalamu Alaikum (Peace be upon you), dear brother or sister! First and foremost, welcome to the fold of Islam. Taking the step to embrace a new faith is a profound, courageous, and beautiful decision. If you are feeling a mix of overwhelming joy, excitement, and perhaps a little bit of anxiety about where to start, please know that you are not alone. Here at Quran Lantern Academy, we are walking right beside you on this incredible path.
When you said your Shahada (the testimony of faith), your slate was wiped completely clean. You started your spiritual life fresh, beloved by the Creator. Now, you might be wondering: what does it truly mean to have Aqeedah (Islamic faith and belief)? How do I anchor my heart in these new truths? Let us explore the core pillars of what we believe as Muslims, breaking them down in a way that brings tranquility to your heart.
The Six Pillars of Faith: Your Spiritual Anchor
In Islam, our faith is built upon six foundational beliefs. Think of these as the roots of a mighty tree. Once these roots are firmly planted in your heart, your faith will weather any storm of life. These six pillars were taught by the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and are found in the Holy Quran.
1. Belief in the Oneness of God (Tawhid)
The absolute heart of Islamic belief is Tawhid (the Oneness of Allah). As a new Muslim, this is the most liberating concept you will ever learn. It means that there is only one Creator, Sustainer, and Master of the universe—Allah. He has no partners, no equals, and no children. You do not need any intermediaries to speak to Him. When you make Dua (supplication/prayer), you are speaking directly to the One who made you, loves you, and listens to your whispers before your words even form.
2. Belief in the Angels
Allah created beings of light known as angels to carry out His commands. They do not have free will; they exist purely to worship Him and manage the universe according to His will. For instance, Angel Jibril (Gabriel) brought down the revelation to the Prophets. Knowing that Allah has appointed noble angels to protect us, record our good deeds, and surround us brings immense comfort, especially in moments of loneliness.
3. Belief in the Holy Books
Muslims believe that Allah sent guidance to humanity throughout history through various prophets. We believe in the original revelations given to Prophet Musa (Moses), Dawud (David), and Isa (Jesus). However, the final, preserved, and complete message sent to all of mankind is the Holy Quran, revealed to the final Prophet, Muhammad (peace be upon him). The Quran is Allah’s literal direct speech, meant to guide you through every single challenge you face today.
4. Belief in the Prophets and Messengers
From Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Jesus to the final messenger Muhammad (peace be upon them all), Muslims love and respect every single prophet sent by God. We recognize that they were all human beings chosen to deliver one core message: Worship Allah alone and do good deeds. Loving Prophet Muhammad as a role model of character, patience, and kindness will transform how you interact with the world.
5. Belief in the Day of Judgment
This life is not the end; it is a temporary testing ground. Belief in the Day of Judgment means knowing that every good deed you do—even a smile or removing a thorn from a path—is seen and rewarded by Allah. It brings justice to a world that often feels unfair, knowing that ultimate justice and mercy belong to the Creator.
6. Belief in Divine Decree (Qadar)
Qadar is the belief in divine destiny or predestination. It means knowing that nothing happens in this universe except by Allah’s permission and wisdom. Sometimes things happen that we do not understand. But a Muslim believes that whatever Allah decrees is ultimately rooted in His infinite wisdom and mercy, even if the blessing is hidden from our sight.
How to Apply This in Your Daily Life
Learning theological concepts is wonderful, but Islam is a practical, lived faith. Here are a few gentle steps on how to integrate your new beliefs into your everyday routine:
- Talk to Allah Constantly: You do not need fancy Arabic words. Speak to Him in your native language throughout the day. Say, “O Allah, guide my heart,” or “Thank You for this blessing.”
- Connect with the Quran Daily: Even if it is just reading one page or a few verses with an English translation, let the words of the Quran wash over your soul every morning or evening.
- Practice Patience with Yourself: You are not expected to learn everything overnight. Take small, consistent steps. Allah loves the deeds that are consistent, even if they are small.
- Surround Yourself with Good Company: Find supportive, kind-hearted Muslims who will encourage you without overwhelming you with rules and cultural expectations.
