Finding Strength in Hard Times: The Inspiring Story of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in Ta’if

Welcome, Dear Reader, to a Journey of the Heart

Assalamu Alaikum (Peace be upon you), dear brother or sister! If you are newly embracing Islam, first of all, welcome to the family. Taking that step to walk the path of faith is beautiful, brave, and life-changing. But as you may have already noticed, being a Muslim does not mean life suddenly becomes easy. In fact, sometimes new tests arrive because of our commitment to doing what is right.

If you are currently facing a difficult moment—whether it is dealing with family misunderstandings, personal hardships, or the overwhelming feeling of trying to fit everything in—take a deep breath. You are not alone. Today, we are going to look at a deeply comforting story from the Seerah (the blessed biography of our beloved Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him) that will remind you how Allah treats His most cherished servants during their darkest hours.

The Lowest Point: The Journey to Ta’if

To truly appreciate this story, we have to travel back in time to Makkah, about ten years after the Prophet (PBUH) received his first revelation. This was known as the Aam al-Huzn, or the “Year of Sorrow.” Within a short period, the Prophet (PBUH) lost his beloved wife Khadijah, who was his greatest emotional support, and his protective uncle Abu Talib.

Left vulnerable, the opposition from the ruling Quraysh tribe in Makkah intensified. The Prophet (PBUH) looked for a new place to spread the message of peace and monotheism. He decided to travel to the nearby mountain city of Ta’if, walking the long, rocky distance on foot alongside his devoted companion, Zayd ibn Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him).

Rejection and Painful Trials

Imagine arriving in a new town, tired, dusty, and hopeful, only to be completely rejected. The Prophet (PBUH) approached the leaders of Ta’if with an open heart, inviting them to worship the One True God. Instead of listening, they mocked him, insulted him, and dismissed him cruelly.

Worse still, they incited the street youth and townspeople to line the paths as he left. As the Prophet (PBUH) and Zayd walked away, stones were hurled at them. Blood soaked the Prophet’s sandals, sticking them to his feet. They were chased out of the city with harsh words, exhaustion, and physical pain.

Can you picture this? The best of creation, the Messenger of Allah, bleeding, exhausted, and utterly rejected by people he only wanted to guide to goodness.

The Beautiful Turning Point: The Dua of Ta’if

They finally found a quiet orchard outside the city walls, resting under the shade of a grapevine. Zayd, deeply worried, tended to the Prophet’s wounds. At that moment, the angels descended from the heavens accompanied by the Angel of Mountains. The Angel of Mountains asked for permission to crush the people of Ta’if between the two mountains surrounding the city because of how cruelly they had treated the Prophet.

Think about how human we are. If someone hurt us that badly, our ego might whisper, “Yes, make them pay!” But look at the incredible mercy of our Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Instead of seeking revenge, he said:

“No! Rather, I hope that Allah will bring forth from their loins people who will worship Allah Alone, not associating anything with Him.”

Turning to Allah in Vulnerability

Then, the Prophet (PBUH) raised his hands to the heavens and made a supplication (dua) that has melted the hearts of believers for over 1,400 years. He said:

“O Allah, to You I complain of my weakness, my lack of resources, and my insignificance before mankind. You are the Most Merciful of the merciful… If You are not angry with me, I do not care, except that Your relief is wider for me.”

Look at his focus! He wasn’t complaining about the people; he was turning entirely to Allah, seeking only His pleasure and reassurance.

How Allah Responded to the Pain

Allah did not leave His beloved alone. Immediately, the spiritual comfort came. A Christian slave named Addas, working in the orchard, saw the Prophet (PBUH) and recognized the scent of prophethood, eventually kissing his hands and feet in reverence.

More importantly, this very trial set the stage for the incredible spiritual journey of the Isra and Mi’raj (the Night Journey and Ascension to the Heavens), where Allah honored the Prophet (PBUH) above the highest heavens, gifting this Ummah (community) with the five daily prayers.

How to Apply This in Your Daily Life as a New Muslim

Dear friend, you might be wondering, “How does this story from ancient history help me today?” Here are practical ways to apply the lessons of Ta’if:

  • Expect tests, but know they are temporary: When hardships come—whether it is losing a job, feeling lonely, or facing opposition from family—remember that even prophets faced intense trials. Hardship is a sign of spiritual growth.
  • Respond with grace: When people misunderstand your new faith or make unkind remarks, try to respond with patience and kindness, praying that Allah guides them one day, just as the Prophet prayed for the people of Ta’if.
  • Pour your heart out in Dua: God (Allah) loves when you are honest with Him. When you feel weak or overwhelmed, raise your hands and use your own words to tell Him about your struggles, just like the Prophet did in the orchard.
  • Trust the unseen plan: Sometimes a closed door or a painful rejection is simply redirecting you toward a much greater blessing that Allah has prepared for you.

Conclusion

The story of Ta’if teaches us that no matter how isolated, broken, or rejected we feel, Allah is always watching, and His mercy is infinitely vast. Every tear shed for the sake of faith is seen and valued by the Creator.
