Allah says in the Holy Quran, in a verse that brings comfort to millions: “And when My servants ask you concerning Me, indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me” (Quran 2:186). Allah is near. He does not need you to speak fancy English or ancient Arabic. He knows the language of your heart.

Dua is the Core of Worship

The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) taught us that “Dua is worship.” When you raise your hands to ask Allah for help, for guidance, or even just to vent your frustrations, you are acknowledging His power and your reliance on Him. Overcoming Common Struggles for New Muslims

Many reverts tell us, “I feel like I’m doing it wrong because I don’t know the traditional Arabic prayers yet.” Let us put your heart at ease: You are never doing it wrong when you speak to Allah with sincerity.

• Language barrier: You can make dua in any language you speak fluently. Allah created all languages; He understands your mother tongue better than you do.
• Feeling unworthy: You might look at your past or your current mistakes and think Allah won’t listen to you. Remember, Allah loves it when a sinner turns back to Him. He is the Most Merciful.
• Unanswered prayers: Sometimes we ask for something and don’t get it right away. The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught us that every sincere dua is answered in one of three ways: Allah gives you what you asked for, He averts a harm from you that is equal to what you asked for, or He saves it as a reward for you in the Hereafter. Nothing is ever wasted!

How to Apply This in Your Daily Life

Spiritual growth doesn’t happen overnight; it is built through small, consistent habits. Here are a few practical ways to weave dua into your everyday life as a new Muslim:

1. The Morning Check-In

Before you even step out of bed, take thirty seconds to thank Allah for a new day. Say, “O Allah, thank You for waking me up today. Please guide my steps and protect my heart.” This sets a spiritual tone for your entire day.

2. Talk to Him Throughout the Day

You don’t need a prayer mat to make dua. Are you stuck in traffic? Talk to Allah. Are you feeling anxious about a work meeting? Whisper a quick, “O Allah, make this easy for me.” This constant companionship keeps your heart anchored.

3. The Best Times for Acceptance

While you can make dua anytime, certain moments carry special blessings. Try to make a heartfelt dua:

• While it is raining (rain is considered a mercy from Allah).
• In the last third of the night, right before Fajr (dawn) prayer.
• Between the Adhan (call to prayer) and the Iqamah (start of the congregational prayer).
• While prostrated (Sujud) in your daily prayers, because you are physically at your closest to Allah.

4. Combine Prophetic Duas with Your Own Words

As you grow, try to learn short, beautiful prayers taught by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). For example, a favorite daily prayer is: “Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina ‘adhab an-nar” (Our Lord, give us in this world that which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good, and save us from the torment of the Fire). You can say this, and then immediately follow it up by asking for your personal needs in English!
